About HKYDA

Hella Kunda Youth Development Association (HKYDA) is a community-based youth group founded in 2015 by young people of Hella Kunda, Upper River Region, The Gambia.

We believe development starts with us, the youth. Instead of waiting for others, we contribute our own resources, time and ideas to build the future we want for our village.

Our Vision

A united, peaceful and developed Hella Kunda where youth are empowered and all community members live with dignity.

Our Mission

To mobilise youth and friends of Hella Kunda to contribute monthly, plan and implement community projects, and promote education, health and social development in the village.

Ongoing

Teachers’ Quarters Project

HKYDA is currently working on building simple, safe accommodation rooms for teachers serving in Hella Kunda. By providing a place to stay, we hope to attract and retain committed teachers for our children.

  • Goal: build basic teachers’ quarters in the village.
  • Funded mainly through members’ monthly contributions.
  • Progress: update this text as work continues (e.g. foundation completed, materials purchased, etc.).
Planned

Education Support Fund

A planned fund to support needy students with learning materials, exam fees and other basic school needs. This project will start as contributions increase and the teachers’ quarters project moves forward.

Planned

Youth Skills & Empowerment

Planned trainings and talks on entrepreneurship, agriculture, leadership and personal development for youth in Hella Kunda and the diaspora.

Leadership

HKYDA is led by committed volunteers elected by members. Leadership is accountable to the general membership through regular meetings and transparent reporting.

Better conditions for teachers

Through the teachers’ quarters project, we aim to provide accommodation so teachers can live comfortably in the village and focus on teaching.

Youth empowerment

Planned trainings, mentoring and events will help youth build skills, confidence and stronger links with the diaspora community.
